Ilulissat, Greenland, August 27

Ilulissat (kind of fun to say once you figure it out) has about 5000 people, third largest city in Greenland. Ilulissat means “icebergs” and our info sheet said there about as many sled dogs as there are people. We took a small boat trip into the icefjiord, which contains unbelievably large icebergs from the most productive glacier, Sermeq Kujalleq also known as Jakobshavn Glacier, in the northern hemisphere. It runs directly from the Greenland Ice Cap. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site and deserves all the press. After the boat trip, we walked a boardwalk to the glacier and visited a newly opened visitor center which was fascinating and gorgeous. We LOVED Greenland and will definitely come back.

Finally got to Greenland

A refresher on glaciers
Didn’t even have to ask them to pose!

Whales in the distance
Perfect weather!

Can’t tell from here what we eventually see
Haven’t seen this kind of warning before
Beginning to get an idea of what’s ahead

The air in the glacier pops as the ice melts. Each of the speakers on the walls corresponds to a different site and its respective sounds. A unique symphony.
Back at the ship – a polar bear reminder. The barricades above the deck workers and the door below are to ensure we don’t get unwanted visitors.

A couple we spent time with from Australia. The last of the big ice on this trip.
