November 4, 2024 Hike and Iceberg Fjord

We stopped for a hike along another riverbed – this time, no park, no trail.  The naturalists spotted a couple of Chilean deer before we disembarked, known as huemul, but could be seen only with binoculars.  They are endangered, among other reasons, due to habitat loss and introduction of red deer, an introduced species.

We walked on gravel, tundra and a great deal of very slippery algae – we were there at low tide and this area gets enormous amounts of rain.  Some good bird sightings – swallows that had arrived from North America, and a couple of shore bird varieties.  Thanks again to Ron for some great pictures of the swallows and the glacier!

Letting Ron know where the gold is located:

Back on the ship, we maneuvered to the Iceberg Fjord – our first up close and personal glacier.
