November 10 – 11, 2024 Garibaldi Glacier, Beagle Channel and Home

A final wonderful zodiac cruise where we watched a young sea lion cavort – I swear he was asking for a swim partner, and saw a blue eyed shag (aka cormorant) nesting colony and a few pairs of kelp geese. We also observed the medial moraine:

From the Britannica: A medial moraine consists of a long, narrow line or zone of debris formed when lateral moraines join at the intersection of two ice streams; the resultant moraine is in the middle of the combined glacier. It is deposited as a ridge, roughly parallel to the direction of ice movement.

The bare spots next to the glacier shows where it’s receded in recent history. Eventually, the forest will fill in

Note the medial moraine between the combined glaciers
Beech trees hanging on by their toenails

Wait for it (video)!
